personal checks
My aunt had worked cleaning for some money for two weeks through this guy and he wrote her a personal check for her services. She cannot get it cashed nowhere. She has had it for about two months now and does not have a bank account or no money to open an account up. She thinks that he jacked her out of her work she done. What can she do? I know I can deposit into my bank but how do I know if he has the funds or does it matter if he does or don’t? Can somebody please explain?

Have her sign it over to you and deposit it to your account. Wait 14 days for the check to clear before giving her the cash.

OR, you can have it cashed at the bank it was drawn on, using just a photo ID. If you go this route, there may be a fee.

She can take it to the bank where the check is written. If it’s a First United Trust check, take it to that lobby window. She will need to show identification. If they won’t let her cash it, she needs to call the guy that wrote her the check and ask him to pay her in cash. You need to stay out of it. If the check bounces in your account, you will get the ding of $25 plus the check amount.

If possible your aunt should go to the bank that the check is drawn off and cash the check there. She will need a valid photo ID to cash it.
If you deposit the check into your account, be aware that you may be charge a fee is the check is returned due to insufficient fund or for any other reason. Once you deposit the check you will probably see the fund in your account within 1-3 days. This does not mean that the check has cleared. The bank is essentially giving you the benefit of the doubt by providing you with funds that they haven’t already received. You need to wait at least 14 days to be sure that the check has actually cleared. If you withdraw the funds and the check is later returned, your bank will charge you account the amount of the check as well as additional fees.

I agree with the other person, don’t get involved by putting it in your account. Your aunt should go to the bank where it was drawn.

There’s more to the story than you’re telling. Why can’t she open a bank account? The fact that she can’t cash it doesn’t mean he “jacked her out” of the money. It’s her problem to cash the check.

Take it to a payday check cashing place and they will cash it for a nominal fee. It’s usually just a couple of dollars and next time have her ask to be paid in cash.

~~Your aunt should be able to cash the check at any branch of the bank the check is drawn on. She just needs ID. If the funds are not good, then she can take the check to the district attorney, or go after the guy in small claims.

If you deposit it into your account and the funds are not there, then they will deduct the amount right back our of your account, plus charge you a handling fee. SO you need to know the check is good. If you are unsure, don’t deposit it.~~

She DOES have money to open a bank account. The check, assuming it is good, IS money to open an account. As a rule, banks will cash checks for up to 6 months after they are written. The ONLY way to be sure the account has enough to cover the check is to go to the bank it is drawn on. YOUR bank can only find out by presenting it to that bank for payment.
